"Not disabled accessible"

About: Hove Medical Centre

This surgery is not fully accessible due to a heavy door .Most people that we a walking stick have to wait for someone to come through to get out but they have now taking the chair away. The other day I was in too much pain to stand and wait and did not want to go back to reception so I tried to get out on my own.The door closed on me causing bad bruising. Surely it is not too much to ask for a surgery to have a door that can be opened by a disabled person without assistance.

Dear TJ,

Thank you for your feedback and I am very sorry that you had difficulties with our doors. In future please do ask staff to help you as they will be more than willing to.

I agree that this is an area for improvement and earlier this year I submitted a bid to NHS England for a minor improvement grant. Part of this funding was to build another consulting room and the other part was to replace the main doors and inner doors with automatic doors plus replace the reception desk with a two level desk. The aim being to make the practice more accessible.

In September I received feedback on the doors and desk that stated they were 'Low Priority'. This week I was notified that my whole bid had been rejected. As the cost of replacing the doors and desk was nearly £20,000 (the main doors on their own being around £11,000), this is something the surgery cannot afford on its own.

I am not going to give up on this and intend to replace those doors when I can get funding. In the mean time I will see if I can find an interim solution such as a door bell so that patients can call for assistance. I appreciate it is not a great solution but hopefully it will help.

Thank you,

Business Practice Manager
