"Flexibility"

About: Ipswich Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as a friend),

I brought an elderly friend for a cataract procedure at 9. 15 am. She did not have operation until 11. 45 am.

She is type 1 insulin dependent diabetic and suffers from a complex and painful back condition. It transpires that she was the last patient on the list. At 11am, she was unable to sit any longer and asked to lay down. She also enquired how much longer she had to wait and was told there were three people in front of her.

I would like to question if a patient with type 1 diabetes should be placed last on the waiting list and if they express that they are uncomfortable some flexibility might have been exercised regarding the order of the list.

My friend was extremely grateful to the staff involved in her care.

Many thanks for leaving your comments regarding your recent experience at Ipswich Hospital. I am sorry if the situation caused your friend any unnecessary stress and discomfort. I have passed your comments onto the matron who covers this area and she sends her apologies and has said "I will take these comments forward to the team and ensure that future booking practices incorporates all information relating to a patient’s physical health conditions." Thank you
