"Gynae Triage"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Accident & Emergency Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

On Friday I had been experiencing a lot of pain that wasn't manageable with painkillers I had at home so my GP sent me up to A&E at the Royal Infirmary. I didn't wait long to be called through the nurse was nice he did my obs and went away to find out where I was supposed to be going. He had said that the GP had requested I be seen in A&E and didn't contact Gynae triage to make them aware I was coming in. I don't think that many GP's are aware of Gynae Triage and that they can send patients there maybe it's something that needs to be highlighted within medical practices.

I was then taken to Gynaecology Triage and I was met by one of the nurses who explained I was going for a scan then they'd discuss things further with me. There was a bit of a wait for the scan as I was waiting alongside women who were coming in for pregnancy scans as I was in the Early Pregnancy Unit waiting area. The radiographer and support worker were really understanding as I had told them I was struggling due to pain and ended up vomiting but they reassured me that they'd be able to do the scan anyway. After my scan I was seen by a nurse who went through some questions with me and gathered information on what had brought me in to the hospital today and what had been going on the last few months.

The doctor came in who was very understanding I can't remember her name but she was lovely. I'm normally quite hesitant with going to the hospital as I've had mixed experiences but this time I was made to feel like I was being listened to and someone was taking me seriously. She came up with a plan quite quickly and went to handover to the nurse what we had discussed. One of the staff nurses had come in her name was Susan. She had given me an injection and then some pain relief. We were chatting about what had been going on and she was really understanding and helpful. Whilst the pain relief and injection took time to work she turned the lights off so I could try and get some sleep as I didn't sleep the night before and once the injection and painkillers had worked with good effect I was allowed home.

This time I had a positive experience of going to hospital and the staff I met were all great. Thank you so much for being there on one of my high pain days and helping to get me a bit more comfortable and for all your understanding it really does make such a difference.

Dear Dionnex

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of Gynaecology Triage.

I am so pleased that you found the staff helpful and understanding. I will share your feedback with the staff as it is always good to know that the care provided was appreciated.

Thank you for highlighting that gynae triage isn't known to all GP's, this is something we can publicise more.

I hope you have now recovered and are feeling better.

Regards

Frances
