"Individualised consultation"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary / Accident and emergency

I went in with abnornal blood test results. I must praise the unit for i did not wait long to be served. The new unit is very clean and organised. The healthcare assistants were very professional unlike the medical professional that initially assessed me. The doctor did not introduce himself and his consultation method was not centred on me as an individual. No explanation given after he had taken my history and examined me. When I asked him he said "do you really want to know what it could be? Let me go and see if majors can get a bed for you. Of course doctor! Its a consultation and i need a differential diagnosis at the end of the session. I need to know the plan of care. So he told me it could be bad news. I just want to let the medics know that when people visit A&E they have questions to be answered, emotions and imaginations to attended to, and there should be a better patient oriented model to consult and examine emergency cases, and deliver bad news.

However I must commend the second medic who attended me. Very professional, attended to my worries, listened to me and maintained eye contact such that I felt valued. Although he was a junior doctor, he had excellent communication skills and prepared me to receive the diagnosis.

Compliments also go to the experienced HCA who took my bloods and the potter ( I surprised the porter because I refused to be portered around in a wheel chair. Lol.) Not everyone is immobile.

I hope my review will be used to improve the service and give praise to the hardworking staff who get things right. Keep up the good work LRI A&E
