"1 year and no treatment"

About: New Birmingham Dental Hospital

Oct 2017 referred to hospital by dentist for restorative treatment possibility.

Dec 2017 a crown became painful, unsure what state gum was in dentist felt the need to drill a hole in the crown to see state of gum. As not conclusive she wanted hospital to look at it. Over Christmas pain was increasing in tooth and dentist phoned hospital to get me seen quick.

Turn up and at reception try to say I have been sent by dentist, have you an appointment? no but... oh no you should not be here. Before I am able to explain, the judgement is made that I am there out of the blue with no appointment. Eventually get seen by a junior consultant who did no examination but listened and read my own typed up medical history. Sends me away as no longer in pain and wait for restorative appointment referral

Appointment for hospital comes for 3 months later in March 2018 and in meantime dentist had to patch the hole in the crown several times.

In March I am seen by someone at the hospital. 40 minutes to see consultant,t hen x ray and hour more to be seen again by specialist - total about 10 minutes with consultant and told to go back to dentist who should lift the crown and see the state of gum as x ray shows its ok.

Go back to dentist who can't understand it all but proceeds to remove the crown completely through drilling it off, finds gum too far gone now to refit a new crown. Left with a temporary crown and referred back to hospital.

I get an appointment for hospital at the outreach center Boot in September 2018. I am again waiting 45 minutes to be seen, x ray and another hour to be seen again. Told tooth needs to come out do you want it out? I can't decide right away, hoping at least put a crown on it.

Go back to dentist and agree to removal. Come November 2018 I still have no appointment for tooth removal at hospital. In meantime been forced to put cap back on myself and also done by dentist several times.

Today in severe pain and feeling dizzy, tooth in so much pain - phone 111 and am told go to dentist. Health care ? None - zero!

Dear 'APS'

Thank you for getting in touch via the NHS website.

Your feedback and specific concerns are of great importance to us, and I am sorry you have not received an appointment for an extraction at Birmingham Dental Hospital.

In order to resolve this matter, I would be grateful if you would email me via: alison.last@bhamcommunity.nhs.uk or telephone 0121 466 7128 with your hospital number or NHS number and other personal details.

I will then be able to liaise with colleagues to ensure the latest referral has been received and inform you of when an appointment will be offered.

In the meantime, as advised by NHS 111 your own dentist will be able to advise you about pain relief whilst waiting for the extraction to be undertaken.

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Yours sincerely

Alison Last
