"Blood Taking Process"

About: Hospital Of St Cross / Clinical haematology

In general the blood taking department is very efficient and offers an excellent service .

However, my last visit was not a pleasant experience and extremely disappointing.

The receptionist was moody and impatient and comes across as rude with people. I waited almost an hour to have the test done , the nurse who saw me was not in a good frame of mind and kept complaining about her supervisor moaning that changing her rota and time meant she could not have any plans or holidays and was not focussed on my needs. She was evidently upset and not listening to me. During the process her supervisor came in with a new job rota and talked to her , that made her even more agitated and distracted . After that she was unable to take the blood and was trying various part of my arms when I asked her to refer to her Manager or someone higher or even take her gloves off to check my veins she then referred to her Manager who came in and told her to try to take it from the mid of my arm using a butterfly. This caused a lot of pain and my arm immediately swelled up and was bruised badly to the point I asked her to remove the needle out as it was not working.

I complained and the supervisor on duty offered to make an appointment for me online for the next day. on arrival the next day the appointment was not booked! once again the receptionist became very agitated when asked and told me to go see the person who made the appointed and said 'they booked it they can sorted it !

Another nurse more gentle and experienced managed to take my blood with no problem and was shocked to learn of my ordeal and saw the bruising on my arm.

I can provide pictures of this if required.

I feel the nurse who dealt with me in the first place needs to be reprimanded bout the pain and discomfort she caused . The receptionist needs to be counselled on her behaviour and how to deal with customers . The supervisor needs to learn not to distract her staff whilst with patients and not to discuss admin issues in public.
