"My Brother"

About: York Hospital

(as a relative),

The system is ridiculous and has let us down. My brother has a history of involuntary muscular contraction to the point where his entire body seizes up and he can't move speak or drink water when his body is dehydrated, he recently contracted shingles and was given Acyclovir as medication.

What they didn't even bother to check is that the side effects include vomiting and diarrhoea, two things that can dehydrate the body, my brother was clutching the sick bowl in one hand, on the loo at the other end and seizing up, he couldn't drink water and he was nearly passing out. Then we decided to ring up the local hospital, they had the sheer gall after we had repeatedly asked to see a doctor now or he was going to pass out from exhaustion and dehydration, the sheer NERVE to ask if we wanted a GP appointment in the morning. Now why would we have said 3 times that we needed someone now if he didn't need someone? ! Riddle me that. It comes across as absurd and downright ignorant.

Continuing on the theme of ignorance, why were his records of him being wheeled into hospital twice before with his muscular contractions not looked at before being given a medication that can pretty much directly lead to dehydration? And WHY was he not prescribed anti sickness medication to combat this? ! Its absolutely appalling and I demand that this get seen by someome and contact is made. What a joke, my poor brother a victim of not only an awful illness but also subject to horrific customer service and downright disreguard to the basic human rights and feelings. Apethetic and disgraceful.

Hi there, sorry to hear about your experience.

I could do with some more information to look into this for you - if you would like to call our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01904 726262 we can look into this further.

It sounds as though you might have either rung 111 or the Out of Hours service, neither of which are services that we provide directly. However, I don't know this without looking into the case more. I just can't think how else you would have phoned the hospital...sorry not to be of more help but unless you would like to call PALS and tell us more, it's not something I can find out more about.

All I can do for now is apologise and say that the treatment you have described above is absolutely not in line with our Trust Values and isn't the kind of service we want any of our patients or their families to receive.

Best wishes to you and your brother.
