"I think my diagnosis, treatment, surgery and..."

About: Manchester Royal Infirmary

What I liked

The surgical team and the day nursing staff were fantastic. I have nothing but admiration for these people. They were very professional at all times and treated you as an individual with dignity and respect. They showed concern and care and explained everything so you understood fully what was going on. They are such hard working people.

What could be improved

Anything else?

I was moved from the emergency surgical unit at 1.0am in the early hours I understand fully that there are people needing emergency admission but I did feel that this was rather late. They had told me I was moving about about 9.0p.m the evening before ,so i was aware. I could not settle down for the night knowing i would be leaving the ward. The porter brought me up to ward 12 and reported to the nurses station where there were a number of nurses talking. He was advised to take me to a specific bed where he left me. I was mobile and self caring so set about quietly unpacking my belongings and putting them away.I waited by my bed till 2.0am for a nurse to check i was okay but nobody came. I got into bed and that was that . At 5.30am the following morning i was woken up by a nurse to enable them to do observations. and when i informed them they were the first person i had spoken to since arriving on the ward they advised me they did not even know i had arrived.I asked them was it not hospital policy to welcome a patient and settle them on the ward especially in the middle of the night, to check for pain, to offer a warm drink. They were very apologetic but I think they were only a nursing assistant .What concerned me most of all was the fact that if i had been more dependent for help then how scared i would have been. I listened to nurses talking for a long time before i went sleep. There was another issue that I think needs addressing. One evening at 9.oclock i informed the night staff very politely that we had not had a warm drink since 5.0pm. They said that people must be too busy. I stated that that wasnt good enough and it was along time to go until breakfast at 8.30am the following morning. I heard them telling another nurse I was complaining and I advised them i was not i was just asking for a warm drink. We did eventually ge a warm drink, but the nurses were not happy about it.Did not like the nights did not think the level of care matched the day staff.
