"Concern over nurse diagnosis in GP surgery"

About: North Staffordshire PCT

(as the patient),

Just voicing my concern about the latest trend at my GP surgery.

When ringing for an appointment with a doctor I was dismayed to be told that I could only see a nurse but "she can prescribe". In desperation I took the appointment.

The problem was that both eyes were sore and badly swollen. The nurse diagnosed an allergy and prescribed anti-histamines and said that if there was no improvement in a week to go back to the doctor.

Five days later when my eyes were considerably worse I rang the surgery again only to be offered an appointment to see a prescribing nurse again. I declined and it was only when I said that I would go to a walk-in centre, was an appointment with a doctor given.

I had an infection in both eyes, had to administer antibiotic ointment to each eye every 2 hours on the first day, every 4 hours on the 2nd day and then had to see an optician on the 3rd day who advised further treatment.
