"Upset by my GP's attitude to a transgender patient"

I went to see my GP in Widnes Health Centre this morning about getting a referral letter from them so that I can start private treatment for gender dysphoria.

The doctor, throughout the entire appointment, insisted on referring to me as "she" and "her" instead of the masculine pronouns that I prefer. When I politely reminded them that I'm transgender and as such find it more comfortable to be referred to as male, they responded by saying they understand it is my opinion that I am male, but as I am "still female" they would continue addressing me as such "until this gender thing gets worked out".

Obviously, this upset me. It would seem that my doctor believes that being transgender means that you are mentally ill, which isn't true.

I would like to see all Doctors under the Halton and St Helens PCT undergo a course on how to treat transgender individuals. Maybe even be given the opportunity to speak with and ask questions to a transgender person/people.
