"ENT department worst bedside manners!!"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary / Ear, Nose and Throat

I just took my son for an appointment at the adult ENT department for his frequent very heavy nosebleeds. We received a phone call in the morning asking if we could attend 45 minutes before the original scheduled appointment. So we did and ended up waiting more than an hour anyway!

But that's not the worst bit. When we finally saw the doctor, she turned out to be the rudest weirdest professional I have ever encountered in my life. She barely looked at my son's nose and suggested cauterization. That's exactly what his GP had done already. But his GP had decided that we should explore the cause of all these bleeds more in depth and that's why he booked the specialist appointment. When I expressed my disappointment in such a superficial examination (his GP has already visited him like that countless times!) she became very aggressive and rude. She asked me why were we there and what more did we want her to do (!!!). She was unpleasant and I was becoming really annoyed with her. I had to tell her that maybe she should be checking whether my son could have a tumor or something else sinister. So then she exclaimed: "Oh that's why you are here then!" and proceeded into looking further inside my son's nose with and endoscope. Seriously?? So awkward...Being a doctor means also to be able to communicate politely and professionally with the patients. Something that this doctor is certainly unable to do. Shame on her.

Dear reviewer,

Thanks for taking the time to post your comment.

We are really sorry, and concerned to hear about your recent experience of our Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) department at the Royal Infirmary. We would like to look into this further as it is not the sort of care we expect from our staff. If you could please send your son’s details (name, address, date of birth and hospital number) to Nicola.Galletly@uhl-tr.nhs.uk this would be very helpful.

Kind regards,

Nicola Galletly
