My husband had been attending the University of Aberdeen Dental School and hospital for restorative dental work.
He had 2 follow up appointments on 12th June, with the hygienist and had to be the first appointment followed by the second on 11th September with Mr Rolllings.
He realised on the 13th June that he had the date wrong and had missed his appointment the day before. He called the direct line number, apologizing for his mistake, he also offered to pay for the missed appointment. This was declined.
At this point he advised the appointment on the 11th September should be cancelled to ensure he attended in the appointments in the correct order, and requested a further 2 appointments.
In July he received a letter dated the 10th July, recognizing that he had cancelled the 11th September appointment and giving him an appointment for the 1st October with Mrs Mackie.
On attending the appointment on the 1st October he was informed that he was no longer a patient as he had missed 3 appointments and a letter to that effect had been sent to his dentist - Dr Pintiado, and future treatment should be carried out by his dental practise.
We immediately called the surgery and spoke with the dental nurse, who informed us they had had no contact with the dental school since 2016.
She said she would call the dental school and get back to us. We have since spoken with the nurse, who informs us that she has called twice but has had no answer to the confusion.
On Saturday 13th October we received a letter, dictated on 19/09/2018 and typed on 27/09/2018, but printed on 11/10/2018 (date in small print at bottom of the page).
This letter stated my husband had missed 3 appointments and due to significant pressures on the service no further appointments would be sent to him.
If he still wishes to be seen by the service he can discuss this with his dentist who has been copied into this letter.
As you can imagine we are a little saddened by this service, although fully understanding the pressures on NHS services at this time we can would understand why someone missing 3 appointments with no contact would be discharged from the service, but as this is not the case we find the treatment some what unfair.
All appointments with the dental school have had to be taken as annual leave form his employment.
As a whole the service received during treatment was commendable therefore you can understand our sadness at this situation.
"We find the treatment unfair"
