I recently underwent a major operation for suspected ovarian cancer and was cared for by the Intensive Care team for 5 days. Each and every member of the team showed me respect and compassion and I felt totally safe and loved whilst I was in their care. I was petrified when I woke from theatre and I recall the kind voices of the Sisters calming me and re-assuring me that they would look after me. The professionalism shown was second to none even when resources were stretched and they were under pressure. Three particular nurses were amazing. They were not only professional and efficient but they made me feel like I was a friend whom they would do anything for. I felt as though they didn’t judge me when I mentioned a pain or when I had a question, nothing was too much trouble for them. At times I felt very embarrassed by the operations side effects and they always put me at ease and treated me with dignity.
I also met the matron whom I gave some feedback too regarding the air vents and I visited the unit today (3 weeks later) and already the issue has been addressed ! The matron obviously respects patient feedback and wants to improve her unit.
I truly believe that without such fantastic care I would not have been discharged so quickly. I didn’t even make it to a ward!
