I feel that the early pregnancy unit (EPU) was fairly unprofessional. I was takien in by ambulance in the early hours one day last week. I had lost a lot of blood and had unfortunately miscarried at 12 weeks. As you can imagine myself and my partner were heart broken, not only that I'd been through so much over the space of a few hours I was exhausted and weak, generally very upset.
We sat there for a total of two hours when we were the only ones waiting to be seen. Obviously I know there are patients on the ward that are seen too, but I was the only emergency that looked like had come in. We sat in the doctors room next to reception at about 2. 30 am, and were in there for a total of two hours. We could hear giggling at the reception/nurses station and general chatting. Considering the ward this is, I felt it was really unprofessional and insensitive. There were clearly women trying to sleep opposite and I was in distress in the room next to it. Then when I had my examination the supporting nurse came in all smiley and giggling! I couldn't believe how insensitive that was.
It was also commented the next day by another department that I should have had a scan there and then and not have to go through the trauma of coming back the next day. I just feel this part of the hospital needs to be looked at and how the staff talk etc on the ward. I had my little girl at Colchester a few years ago and I couldn't fault the main antenatal care or ultrasound care I received, they were fantastic, I will be forever grateful. However, this experience with the early pregnancy unit has left me extremely sad and disappointed.
