As a 22 year old girl, when I found out I had to get a colonoscopy I was naturally fairly terrified and upset, but if you could have seen the smile I came out with you would have never believed I had been for one! The nurses and doctors in the hospital were so nice and they made me feel so calm. I was close to crying when I got in and they took a lot of time to speak to me and make me understand what was happening and to make sure I was as comfortable and calm as I could be. They even let me sit in a little room with my friend because they realised that the waiting room was incredibly daunting for me.
I was meant to be just getting a Sigmoidoscopy, but they found a polyp and so I needed a full colonoscopy to check there weren't any more. I didn't have sedation because it wasn't meant to be so far in my large intestine, but I can honestly say I felt not even a bit of pain, even with only getting gas and air as pain relief. Doctor Gilchrist was lovely. She made sure I knew exactly what was happening and explained everything very clearly, and even humoured me while I was talking nonsense on the laughing gas. Even when she cut the polyp off I didn't feel any pain. The nurses were lovely too, being really nice to me and chatting away. They talked me through everything very clearly and answered any questions I had, as well as giving me lots of chances to ask questions. When I got back to the recovery ward I wasn't let down there either. All the nurses were good humoured, they were quick to look after me and give me tea and toast. They chatted to me and made sure I felt ok. The nurses even gave me a hug when I left and made sure I felt alright and were all just so kind to me.I couldn't recommend Kirkcaldy more as a hospital. The staff all went out of their way to be kind, professional and good humoured. I can honestly say it was a great experience and really interesting to be able to watch the procedure, and even better to know I will be feeling much better and healthier post my polyp removal! I honestly cannot thank the staff enough for being so comforting and helpful.
