"Help with respiratory problems"

About: Royal Free Hospital / Respiratory medicine

I have had a respiratory problem for over four years that was preventing me from doing exercise (e.g. running, martial arts) and at times made me breathless even walking. I had surgery which alleviated some of the worst symptoms (inability to smell or taste) but I was still unable to run for more than 1 or 2 minutes without having to stop.

Earlier this year I was referred to the Royal Free's Centre for Respiratory Medicine. After extensive tests by the consultants, I was referred to one of the Royal Free's physiotherapists.. Over several appointments, which were a pleasure as she was each time very friendly and professional, she suggested various exercises to improve my breathing and overall posture.

I hadn't been running for 4 months, but on her recommendation a few weeks ago, I tried going for a run in the park. I was expecting to have the same difficulty and have to stop after a minute or so due to breathlessness. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could once again run for 10-15 minutes without stopping, and for 30 minutes in total, which was my old regular routine.

Since my medication hasn't been changed, I can only attribute this improvement to the physiotherapy exercises to improve my breathing.

I am very pleased with this outcome, and wanted to express my gratitude to the respiratory team, and particularly to the physiotherapist.
