"Communication non-existent"

About: Leeds General Infirmary / Accident and emergency

My son who is 19 was taken to A&E via ambulance with an attempted suicide. He is a student, away from home, and depressed. I am a parent who is beside myself trying to help him. I am also a next of kin who was NEVER informed that my boy could've died. He was sent home later day. Considering he's got mental health issues, and no support or follow up from mental health services I am appalled that A&E staff did not think it would have been appropriate to inform next of kin of him being admitted with a suicide attempt so I could be there for him. Worse still, when I tried to speak to A&E, the staff kept putting phone down on me. All I wanted to establish was if the next of kin should be involved ...The nurse laughed at my question, said my line was very bad and hung on me!!! So, all I can say , if you have a depressed child beware because health professionals in Leeds Infirmary don't think it's important enough to alert parents if the child is trying to commit a suicide...

Thank you for taking the time to write to us.

I am very sorry to read that the communication you received from our hospital whilst you son was an inpatient did not meet your expectations.

I have passed your comments onto the Matron for urgent care for information, however It would be very beneficial for our services and for future patients if you could discuss the matters you have raised further with our Trust’s Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS). This would also allow us look into the matters you have raised more thoroughly.

Please call our Patient Advise and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0113 206 6261 or alternatively email patientexperience.leedsth@nhs.net

kindest regards
