"Registration Process not Accessible for..."

About: The Glebe Family Practice

I went to register with The Glebe earlier today and was told that I would have to:

- Come before 8:00 a.m. on 11 October and queue up

- Only 20 places available

They would not give me a form to fill in.

Apparently they do not have a normal type of registration procedure or Waiting List.

I have several chronic illnesses, my mobility is poor (scooter user) and my 2 children will have to come with me.

I will ring the Practice Manager later and make a formal complaint, but I do not feel this registration procedure is accessible to disabled people and those with painful chronic illness as to be there waiting outside in all weathers, extremely early, in competition with others for a place really only ensures that the fittest will get a place.

Thank you for raising the issue of equal access to services at the practice, and we are sorry if the process seems inhumane or unfair. We have a first come first service registration process once a month, but there is no requirement to attend in person on the day in question, and indeed we have registered patients from nursing homes who are completely housebound since having this process in place. Owing to the shortage of skilled clinical staff we have had to introduce a monthly limit on the number of registrations, to prevent our service from being swamped.

We do not permit or condone discrimination on any grounds but there is no simple way to make the process completely fair and transparent. We hoped that these measures would be temporary, and that the recruitment climate might improve. We do have a duty to our staff and existing patients not to take on more than we can manage, and thereby compromise standards of care.

Whilst we have considered the possibility of a waiting list unfortunately the reality is that the number of people requiring to join our practice far exceeds the number of places available, and as such a waiting list would soon become a closed list.
