"Excellent care"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Adult Critical Care Unit (ACCU) University Hospital Wishaw / Cardiology (Ward 4) University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I would just like to thank everyone involved with the care given to my father.

A few months ago he had a fall outside, resulting in serious injury, paramedics arrived fairly quickly and very professionally they moved him from the ground onto a stretcher using supports for his neck and back and then into the ambulance, where they further assessed him before taking him to Wishaw general.

On arrival at the hospital, he was quickly treated in A&E and sent for x-rays, all staff where extremely pleasant and helpful, especially the porter who joked with him to keep his spirits up.

He was diagnosed with several broken ribs and a pneumothorax and haemothorax and admitted to ward 18. The staff in this ward were friendly and attentive even though they were extremely busy. Whilst in this ward Doctor Thornton assessed my father and noticed his heart was struggling and he was having breathing difficulties and moved him to ACCU/HDU. I cant thank DR Thornton and her team enough without her im sure things may have been different for my father.

The staff in ACCU/HDU cannot be commended highly enough from myself and the rest of our family, they made him really comfortable and us also, they gave us a room to stay with him that night and it really helped us. The whole staff in this ward deserve a mention as they are all a credit to the job and the hospital. After a few weeks of excellent care from DR Thornton and her team, nurses, clinical support workers, physio and xray staff, he was allowed to move back to ward 18.

Whilst in ward 18 unfortunately he declined again and had to have a chest drain put in, he seemed to be extremely uncomfortable and again the wonderful Dr Thornton and her team noticed his heart was stopping and rushed him back to ACCU where they found he had chest sepsis, after a few more weeks under the watchful eye of Dr Thornton and the whole team in ACCU, he was allowed back to ward 18, then 17 and finally we have him home, he is making steady progress and hopefully will be back to normal soon.

Cant thank everyone enough without you all im sure things would have been a different story.

Many Thanks

Dear Hope 67,

Many thanks for taking the time to post your lovely comments. I am delighted to hear that your father is recovering well at home after such a traumatic time for you all. It is very reassuring to know that you felt that the care your father received from Dr Thornton and the teams in each of the areas was excellent. I am sure they will be pleased to receive such positive feedback as they take great pride in the care they deliver not only to patients but their families. I will share your comments with Dr Thornton and the teams in each of the areas.

I hope your father continues to make steady progress and is back to normal soon,

Best Wishes

Maureen

Thank you for taking the time to record your compliment on Care Opinion. Firstly, I am so glad that your Father is now at home after such a worrying time for you all. I oversee the Portering service you mention at the beginning of your message and I am just delighted that you have included us in your comment. While I don't know what Porter dealt with your Father, we are very proud of the Portering service at University Hospital Wishaw. I will make sure the porters know of this compliment and what a positive difference they make to patients' experience. I hope your Father continues to get better.

Kindest Regards Rhona Dunsmore Serco Soft Services General Manager
