"On usage of the hand sanitising facility."

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske)

(as a service user),

I attended for an MRI scan and as usual found everything efficient & staff very kind.

On my exit through the main entrance I stopped for a coffee & for 25 minutes saw all who came in & passed by the hand sanitising facility. I noticed that very few people stopped to use it. Probably 70% walked by.

I notice peoples eye directions and they are not seeing it. It's on a bend and people are just focusing straight ahead as you would do. Just a suggestion, but if you catch people's attention nearer the entrance at the columns past reception, where the walkway doesn't bend it might have more effect.

Could I also suggest instead of orange have red, we all know red is a warning. It struck me with so many people passing it, impossible not for bugs to spread.

Dear carinaze94

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your story here. I am pleased that you found your MRI scan experience to be positive again and I will ask a member of staff from the Imaging department to respond to you directly about that, so you can be assured that your comments will be shared with staff.

With regard to your comments about hand sanitising, this is extremely valuable feedback thank you. I have shared this with our Infection Prevention and Control team, who have confirmed that hospitals are encouraged to have sanitiser available in visible public areas, such as the entrances. However, unfortunately the use of the sanitiser is not something we are able to enforce with the public.

As you have noticed, the positioning of the hand sanitising stations are important in order to encourage use. Over the years the team have reviewed the signage and re-positioned the stations many times to maximise their visibility. The team would like to also thank you very much for your observations, as this issue remains under continuous review and your feedback is really helpful.

With regard to your suggestion about colour, again this is useful feedback to take on board. I do however believe that red is used in other areas for infection control reasons and I hope this reassures you.

Many thanks again and kind regards

Jenny

Dear carinaze94,

Thank you so much for taking the time to feedback on your positive experience during your MRI scan. It is always great to pass on positive feedback to our imaging staff. I will ensure that the team lead, James Shaw, shares your comments with the MRI team.

As service improvement lead for imaging, it is important to receive suggestions for change and, as mentioned by Jenny, we will also continue to review our hand sanitising facilities within our imaging departments.

Kind Regards

Glenda
