"Lumbar discectomy on Beckett Ward"

About: St Albans City Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I really cannot fault this hospital and the care I received. My MRI showed a large disc herniation on my L5/S1 so I went in for a planned operation end of August 2018. I wanted to leave a review as it's quite a big operation and it's hard to find out other people's experiences. I'm 32.

I was given a side room and various members of staff came in to ensure the paperwork was completed and my consultant came in to reiterate what he's planning to do during the operation and allowed opportunity for me to ask further questions and made sure I was happy to go ahead. Nerves kicked in right before I went to theatre which made me tearful but the nurses were so nice and reassuring.

After I came round, staff were very attentive and made sure I wasn't in pain and were feeling my legs to check they weren't numb. My consultant and anaethesist both came in to check on me that evening. Nothing was too much trouble for the nurses, despite that I can see that they were busy.

The next morning, I did have to be moved to a bay as there were no bay spaces left for male patients but that was fine. The physiotherapists came round to show me how to do my exercises at home and made sure that I could walk up the stairs ok. The ward was very clean.

Its been two weeks and I've not had any sciatica so far so it's all looking positive!

Thank you for your feedback, Luci. We are so pleased that your treatment was delivered with the care it requires, and that you are on the mend! We shall pass your kind words onto the teams.
