"Initial ent consultation"

About: Lister Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

My appt was for 3.25pm. I arrived nice and early, was checked in promptly and waited in the designated area. It was later announced that appts with a particular consultant were running about 45 mins over time. In actual fact I was seen an hour later by one of the registrars.

The examination itself was fine, however I did feel the doctor had a somewhat blasé attitude about his findings. Essentially it appeared I had a cyst on my vocal cord. The Doc's advice was I could either go to the voice clinic for further examination or be put on the list for theatre and whatever is seen while I'm under a GA would be taken out. That was the extent of his explanation of the surgery. I acknowledge that he was likely mindful of being extremely delayed and so that may have impacted on his 'bedside manner' but surely if you're suggesting surgery as an option it goes without saying that you explain how the procedure works, what the recovery process is etc..

I was happy to attend the voice clinic so it wasn't a big deal for me but other patients who would've gone for surgery straightaway may have felt unable to ask questions about it.

Many thanks for your observations, which we will share with the ENT team - whatever the circumstances, people attending clinics do need to have everything explained to them when a course of action is being discussed.
