"Really Great Hospiral With Some Flaws"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (London)

I was brought in by ambulance, there was a slight delay for the nurse in charge to assist to the ambulance crew and to me and we were left standing for a while but it wasn’t a critical emergency. The head nurse was so lovely and I felt that she genuinely cared which was nice. One thing I found disturbing was the doors between waiting for a doctor and where people come through in the Red Zone were left open, so I could see those were critically ill coming in and hear some details about the illness which I don’t think I should be able to hear. I think it would be more appropriate to have those doors closed to allow a divide between critical and non ciritcal cases and so those critically ill patients have some privacy when they are being brought in and don’t have everyone in the waiting area staring at them. At the end of the day, it’s the Red Zone for a reason, the people coming in there are very unwell and I feel it’s only right that the doors to that area are closed so, like I said, people in other waiting areas aren’t staring or hearing details they shouldn’t be hearing. I also think there should be a procedure for how nurses handle urine samples. I had to do one and when I came out of the toilet there was no nurse in the room. I had to walk into an area I shouldn’t have been in, had one nurse say “Oh my god who is she?” (which I found rude) and ask a completely different nurse if she could take care of the sample which was just sitting on a table in the room. I found it all a bit humiliating and it wasn’t done with any respect for my dignity at all. The thing you are supplied with to do the sample is not appropriate either considering it is basically a sick bowl and has no lid or covering on it. And considering I needed to carry this through a hallway, it was very inappropriate. Also, the nurse who said “Oh my god who is she?” when I came out of the room I found to be very rude. At that time, I was a patient in her care and she spoke about me as if I was some sort of intruder or I shouldn’t have been there, even though I had no choice because no one was going to come to me. The nurses are down to earth at the hospital, but in this case I feel it was too down to earth and she should have been more professional. I was given medication for my illness, and one of the nurses came out, handed it to me and said “You need to take these.” and then walked away. I had no idea if I needed to stay, if I was now discharged, there was no other information given to me. I realise that hospitals are very busy places and she probably had a million places to be, but a little more information wouldn’t have hurt or even “take care, goodbye” nothing. I left feeling a little bit let down, even though the healthcare was amazing and they did everything possible to help me and get to the bottom of my problem, I still felt a little bit let down by how it had all been delivered.
