"Lack of compassion AMU"

About: Epsom Hospital

My sister was admitted to AMU via A&E.

She was in severe pain with signs of an infection.

Upon arrival in AMU she requested pain relief. Apparently the required medicine needed to be re -prescribed by the on duty doctor. This was an entirely reasonable explanation delivered in a defensive, verging on aggressive manner by the on duty sister.

This attitude by senior staff continued to be a problem throughout her stay.

I was under the impression the ward wasn’t sufficiently staffed and I know my sister wasn’t always acting in her usual manner because of the severe pain she was experiencing but nurses, especially in a senior capacity, should recognise the impact this has on a person.

I feel that, in my opinion, inadequate staffing for a large ward of mostly older people with multiple problems and major nursing requirements contributed to the stress experienced by these very hard working nurses however as a registered nurse I was, for the first time, saddened by the lack of sympathy and defensive attitudes exhibited by experienced nursing staff.

Increasing workload and an under resourced service will lead to many excellent staff being experiencing burnout and leaving their profession

(NB you ask for name of department involved in a review but

AMU iis not listed)
