"failed appointment 05/09/2018"

About: University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

.I attended the Qehb this morning for a medical liver biopsy. My appointment was scheduled for 07.30, I arrived @ 07.20 to be checked in I was shown to a bed on one of the wards and left there with no further contact, not even an hello how are you, for 1. 1/2 hours. @ 09.00 I approached the nurses team to ask what was the delay, to which the reply was we are quite busy. @ 09.30 I was admitted this was 2hours after my arrival ( 2hours). No one explained the process of how the day was structured what would take place or when. I was advised that I would be theatre @ 11.00. @ 11.30 I was still sat by the bed waiting for some form of communication, to no avail. I asked to speak with the consultant about my appointment because I had a few queries that need to be clarified. The consultant sent one of his team to speak with me, who, did not have the knowledge to answer my concerns. The consultant did not attend even though I asked to see him. I agreed to the procedure, however under duress. When I was due to go to theatre I was advised that I would have to remain on site a further 6 hour after the procedure as part of the hospital's procedure, why was this not pointed out earlier. The procedure never took place and was cancelled due to my apprehension over the whole procedure taking place and the rationale behind it, this compounded by the surgeon who advised me a couple of times that this procedure was not without risk, plus my 4 hour wait without any communication left me feeling quite anxious about the whole process. I was not even escorted out of the theatre, just left the theatre to return to my now absent bed space on my own.

Very disappointed patient.

Regards,

Mr James O'Connell
