"Rheumatology Consultant at Ashford Hospital"

About: Ashford Hospital / Rheumatology

(as the patient),

I have just returned home from a horrible experience with a consultant at Ashford Hospital. I have been suffering with knee problems for over a year now, and thought that today I would finally get to the bottom of it. I didn't expect to be left shaken and crying,

From the beginning of the appointment I felt the consultant was patronising, telling me how to sit properly in my chair and repeatedly questioning any answers I gave to them. They proceeded to launch a tirade on chiropractic care, saying it is pointless and unnecessary, which I found very unprofessional. They said every treatment I have tried before was pointless and almost seemed to imply it was my fault. This was the easy part.

As I was leaving and the consultant made yet another dig at chiropractors, I got upset and as I started to cry they began to shout in my face saying that I was offending and had really upset them, before basically shoving a box of tissues in my face and saying I was being offensive! The consulant said 'What's wrong, why are you crying?'. I then left the room and they talked to my Mother and asked if I 'was always like that' and said I was shoving advice back in their face. They had literally been shouting at me as I was crying and I was so shaken and they could see that - I hadn't said a word about their advice, just that I thought their personal attack on other treatments wasn't very helpful.

I found the consultant to be very aggressive and uncaring to me and I was utterly mortified by my experience. To be yelled at when feeling vulnerable and upset is surely not what the NHS is about?
