"A modern snake pit"

About: City and Hackney Centre for Mental Health

Some of the staff here are friendly and well-meaning. Others are condescending, rude or uncommunicative.

I was treated as an insane person here when I was admitted for attempting suicide after having a nervous breakdown.

I was there for 4 days, never properly assessed or treated. It was just assumed I would be staying for the foreseeable future, and encouraged to join in with the clinic routine, which was dominated by manic, often violent patients who were allowed to act exactly as they pleased.

The more you are treated as insane, the crazier you feel. I had to leave before I started to think of myself as crazy. I wasn't insane, I was just very unhappy and going through a terrible time.

This is concerning feedback. It sounds as being admitted to the unit was a very distressing experience when you were feeling extremely vulnerable. I am sorry that you did not feel you were supported on the ward by some of our staff. We would be keen to contact you directly to look into what happened here. Posts on NHS Choices are anonymised so we have no way of contacting you. So we would appreciate if you contacted our PALS/Complaints service on our freephone number: 0800 085 8354 to talk through what happened. Or via another channel: https://www.elft.nhs.uk/Contact-Us/Complaints-Comments-and-Suggestions

We really appreciate you posting this feedback as we can only make improvements if we know what it has felt like to be on one of our wards. I hope you are now getting the support you need to recover and get back on track with your life.
