"Torn MCL"

About: University Hospital Wishaw

(as the patient),

I was kicked by a cow while working. After struggling with it for a week I decided that it wasn't going to get any better and attended accident and emergency at wishaw general.

Thankfully, there was a qualified physio on duty called Alan who was immediately able to diagnose that I had torn my MCL. I felt that I was really fortunate to have gone in on a day when there was a physio present as I could potentially have been discharged to rest the knee with no proper management of the tear.

Instead I left with a knee brace to prevent lateral movement of my knee thus protecting me from further injury to my knee such as meniscal or cruciate ligament tears. I feel that seeing a physio in a&e has accelerated my recovery from injury and potentially prevented a more serious injury. I believe they are well placed to assess traumatic injuries in a&e and was pleased to have Alan in charge of my care.

Dear Crocked Prop

Thank you for posting your feedback on this forum. It is great to hear that you found being seen by Alan in the emergency unit so beneficial. Having physiotherapy within the department has been a fairly new concept for NHS Lanarkshire but has proven to be very successful for those who attend with a musculoskeletal condition. I am delighted that you have been given the right advice on first contact which will lead to a speedier and better recovery. I hope that your knee continues to improve and you are able to return back to your normal duties very soon.

Thanks again

Claire Rae
