"Crisis team"

About: Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust / Crisis resolution

(as a parent/guardian),

Call it a crisis team, how on earth did they get that name, based on my experience. My son who has schizophrenia has bad suicidal thoughts and intentions. I phoned these so called crisis team to get fobbed off onto someone at Aire court, and spoke to a staff member there. felt like they were about putting people down. I felt suicidal after speaking to this person who seemed to have no intention of helping my son who wanted to end it all.

This person said that if he wanted to do that he would have done it, and surely this is a cry for help. There’s no actual help out here for mental health you just go round in circles to get fobbed off onto someone else it’s like going around in one big vicious circle. I feel it’s a disgrace I started off with calling 111 who passed me onto a doctor that was no help I phoned the police out twice I’ve been to a&e where there wasno help there.

I phoned the becklin centre they couldn’t help me and then aire court to get talked down to.  I feel utterly disappointed by the way we have been treated especially by the psychiatrist. That’s another one that talks down to you, not only my son but also to me and my family. Your not supposed to feel shocking coming from a psychiatrist appointment surely you are supposed to feel better but no each time we have been it’s no better.

Hi

Thank you for your feedback and please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to you. I certainly appreciate that you just want what is best for your son and the responses you describe in your postings from professionally qualified staff sound really frustrating. I know that families as well as service users are often on the receiving end of complex decision making from professionals and it is our job to make help and support easier to obtain at the time that it is needed. I'm disappointed that this was your experience.

I shared your posting with the Clinical Operations Manager for the Crisis Assessment Service. She wasn't sure (as your posting is anonymous) whether your son was already under the care of the Community Mental Health Team at Aire Court? as this would explain why your call was diverted there. I would expect the Crisis team to signpost your contact to the service which is more familiar with your sons condition as a helpful measure, not one that is an attempt to frustrate the matter further and make you feel fobbed off.

We do expect as an organisation that our staff consider the feelings and rights of others. Your account of the intervention you received from the member of staff at Aire Court isn't acceptable at all.

I would like to have the opportunity to review your contact in more detail in order to provide a fuller response so that we are able to challenge the behaviour you describe of our staff.

Can I please encourage you to make contact with our PALS department (0800 052 5790 / palslypft@nhs.net) with further details so I can progress this as an investigation.

With kind regards
