"A & E not up to basic standards."

About: Hereford County Hospital / Accident and emergency

My 78 year old father was taken in by ambulance arriving at approximately 17.00 in severe respiratory distress - we arrived to visit him at 20.00 to discover that he still hadn't been reviewed by a Doctor and had also not been offered anything to eat or drink ! Come on guys - this is the most basic of care needed in a hospital in this country - when someone is on a trolley and unable to walk they cannot get to the nurses station to help themselves to a drink - this must be addresed immediately. We then waited until 12.20 for my father to be assessed by a Doctor after repeatedly asking why he hadn't been seen - I eventually threatened to take him home as they were doing nothing differently that we could have provided at home ie oxygen. When the Doctor finally assessed him he decided he needed a chest xray which he proceeded to have after 1.00 am - this should have been done as soon as he arrived in the department given his symptoms and condition - this is not acceptable care . I just hope that the care he nowreceives on Arrow ward is up to standard.
