"December birth"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Maternity

(as a service user),

I was sent straight to East Surrey after a meeting with the consultant showed I had pre eclampsia and needed to be induced.

All seemed ok at the start, the procedure well explained and 1st midwife was very friendly.

The next day, I had the 2nd tablet and the care really plummeted from there. Left for hours on end not even seeing the 2nd midwife on the ward, was put on a heart monitor for baby which was showing a slightly flat heart rate but was told to just eat and drink. I was trying but couldn't keep anything down, asked 3 times about a drip but was nearly 6 hours and a change of staff before I got one even when the cannula was already in and all that I needed was them to hook up the bag. They then had to put it on fast as so dehydrated.

When I was cannulated, blood had gotten on my sheet. Asked for new ones and was told they were busy, asked again a while later and was told that if I wanted sheets that I would have to tidy my cubicle first ( there were some bottles of half drunk squash on the side and my uneaten dinner but nothing terrible). Eventually a friend of mine who worked in A and E came to visit on her break and asked about sheets and she changed them for me.

Heart monitor kept on for hours until a consultant came in and the matron of the ward (who was on holiday and had to travel in) and were not impressed that given my complications and a static heart rate for baby for last 5 hours that I had not been referred up. The 2nd midwife had been giving the monitor to one lady repeatedly and not sharing it out adequately either.

Taken to labour ward around 11pm that night for more attention in the consultants words and told my waters would be popped, midwives there were all great but need to be more aware about not encouraging feeding if polyhydramnios after delivery.

I bled out quite badly and when I broached the subject was told that it was normal and to get on with it by one midwife, attempted a shower but severe bleeding so got covered and was then moaned at for not showering until I mentioned bleeding again and was told that the amount was not normal and needed a doctor.

No room on the post delivery ward so were placed in neonatal room which was fine but the lights did not dim at night so sleeping very hard and we weren't allowed to use emergency buzzers as they linked to a different room and the midwives didn't respond anyway. Mainly sat around outside laughing and when I went to the toilet then one of them asked if my cubicle was tidy this time, bit rude.

Had to have blood tests to test iron and anaemia levels, I need an anaesthetist every time as poor veins. Multiple times my blood samples lost so had to wait for them to be free again.

Discharge was performed to all the ladies on the ward at once the night before they thought we might go home.

All round, terrible care I felt. Didn't feel safe and didn't have enough staff to cover the amount of patients, multiple members of staff telling us that it was hectic and December is usually busy but not this busy. Some checks didn't seem to be performed even though it stated they needed to be on my sheet, no mention of these in my notes. Some midwives admitting to sending home people before they would usually as needed the beds.
