I was admitted to be induced at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital.
First we arrived and were swiftly settled into a room in which we were informed that my partner could stay as long as I was there for. This instantly put my mind at ease as I get very nervous staying in hospital alone. (Unbeknown to myself and my partner, Westburn ward were to be in receipt of comfy recliners for the partners a week after my admission). That didn't stop my partner sleeping on the floor and the midwives did everything in their power to ensure my partner was cared for also. Which is above and beyond their remit! And we are very thankful.
Unfortunately my induction was not to be and I had to be taken for an emergency c section due to complications. The doctors and nurses were absolutely excellent in calming me and preparing me for what was to come.My c section also came with complications and I had a haemorrhage. Thankfully due to the professionalism of the surgeons and everyone involved I pulled through and settled through in recovery. There I met an absolutely brilliant midwife called Margaret. I literally have no words for how well she cared for me. With my type 1 diabetes, I wasn't an easy patient to care for! Due to my baby being early and complications of an infection, she was admitted to the neonatal unit. This worried me a little and i was anxious to meet her. I was also worried that I wouldn't be able to see her until I was cleared of my infection. To my surprise, the midwife in recovery and the neonatal unit arranged for my baby to be wheeled down to see me which was absolutely amazing. To see my baby for the first time really was a special moment, considering after everything that happened. The next day, after I recovered a little, myself and my baby were taken to ashgrove to recover for another 3 days before being discharged, which was excellent. The midwifes were extremely caring and always around to help. Even if they were busy and at times full with patients.
Again, with my experiences with Aberdeen Maternity Hospital, i literally cannot fault any aspect of my, or my two children's care whilst we were there. We are so lucky to have the caring hospitals we do in Scotland. And I possibly wouldn't be here without the care and dedication our doctors, nurses, midwifes and everyone involved. I can't tell you how grateful and lucky I feel. As I always say, the NHS and it's staff are never thanked enough for their lifesaving work. Please could you pass on to Margaret, and all the staff that work in recovery and labour wards that work day and night shift, a great big thank you from myself. Forever be grateful.
