What I liked
The SHDU ward at St Peter's is a small post-surgery unit with 5 beds. I was on the unit for 10 days and received nothing but the best care I could ever wish to have by every member of staff.
Every staff member was always busy, but had time to speak with you if you wanted to and their caring nature showed through eveything they did. The nursing students & HCA's on the unit were also "top class", and with the more senior staff from the staff nurses up to the Consultant I have nothing but praise for. Their care in all matters was beyond professional.
In particular was their insistence that wherever possible, all your care was carried out by a same-sex member of staff as well as ensuring that ones dignity was respected at all times, even when you were visited by your Consultant.
The cleaning staff were thorough and always ensured that the Unit was kept spotless, but not only this, they were friendly and always had time for a quick hello which made the whole unit a more "normal" place to be. I was on the unit for a long time so got to know most of the staff quite well, whereas most patients only stay for 2-3 nights.
I could not wish to have had to be anywhere else, apart from at home maybe, while I recovered from my difficult surgery.
What could be improved
Nothing
Anything else?
If you have been advised that you will be on the SHDU unit after your surgery - do not worry as you will find that the care you receive will be nothing but the best.
"The best NHS staff and Unit in the UK."
