"C-section delivery"

About: Basildon University Hospital / Maternity

I was booked in for a planned C-section in 16th July. Aside from a very long and quite scary day I want to say how well looked after and safe I felt in the day and give my thanks to the cedar ward team, the theatre team and also NICU ward for taking such good care of my baby and myself. The team explained all detail and have been very accommodating to any requests I have made. Special mention to a member of staff and the team from theatre on 16th July, she held my hand throughout the spinal block and delivery - what an incredible asset to have someone reassure you that much. I would like to also mention a student midwife on Cedar ward, she was also extra helpful.

Thank you also to NICU team and especially one member of staff for coming to see us in Cedar ward for updates and for allowing us to come down to the ward to hold and breastfeed Baby while he was poorly and being cared for.

The only slightly negative remark I wish to bring to attention is that there should be more actual help to establish breastfeeding- I wanted to really make sure I knew what to do when it was time to leave the hospital but wasn’t even offered a pump - or aware they have one to request. As the hospital says they support breastfeeding, they should maybe allocate one person per shift to go around and focus on assisting to get the baby to suck right or start milk flow by pumping as it’s quite hard to establish all this I you don’t really know that you are doing. This would save money on bottle feeding and give confidence to new mums and deliver the best feeds for a new baby.

All in all I received exceptional service through out and want to express how thankful I am and recommend Basildon hospitals maternity ward to anyone who is hesitant on the choice of hospital.

Firstly may we apologise that our response did not appear on this site earlier, and to offer our congratulations to you and your family.

Your comments about the care you and your baby received, and also your suggestion about more support for mums wishing to breastfeed, have been forwarded to the senior teams to share with staff in Maternity and on NICU.

Please remember that any woman who has given birth at Basildon University Hospital, no matter how long ago, is able to self-refer to our ‘birth afterthoughts service’. Mums can contact the service to talk through their birth experience, ask general questions, or try to piece together those hazy hours spent in labour that often seem impossible to recall.

You can contact this service by calling 01268 524900 Ext 3458 or emailing birthafterthoughts@btuh.nhs.uk.

Thank you once again
