"Abandoned in a Ward."

About: Luton & Dunstable Hospital

What I liked

The commitment of the nursing staff

What could be improved

We arrived at Ward 26a with a 4 week old baby at 6.30 pm after being referred by our GP, and, were finally allowed to leave at 00.45am. Sitting for over 6 hours with a small baby and receiving about 20 minutes of treatment, we did get the feeling of being left in a room and abandoned. I know the hospital was busy but doctors coming in taking notes and saying I'll be back in 10 minutes, then disappearing for hours doesn't really give you the feeling of being looked after. Staff are obviously thin on the ground and under pressure. Not a pleasant experience.

We are very sorry to hear of your bad experience. Ward 26a is the Paediatric Assessment Unit at the L&D which deals with a large volume of emergency admissions of very sick babies. As you saw, the ward was extremely busy during your time there, but at no point would we have wanted you to feel that you and your baby were not being well looked after. We would very much like to look into the matter further to discover why your experience fell short of what we would expect. Could you please contact the Complaints Officer via email at: complaints.officer@ldh.nhs.uk or telephone the hospital on 0845 1270127 and ask for the Complaints Department.
