"I had no means of getting home"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I was once sent by ambulance from Dr's surgery to Musgrove as my heart was in Atrial fibrillation. After waiting 2-3 hours with the paramedic accompanying me also waiting, I was admitted to a bed in the assessment ward. It was a mixed ward and very busy. A doctor examined me but I had to wait again. It was now early evening having arrived there about 11.00am.

A very 'brusque' nurse eventually gave me a pack of prescription tablets and told me I was free to go. Having gone straight from a Dr's appointment I had no money or suitable clothing to go out and wait for a bus to Wellington. I asked for a hospital car but was told it was only for people on benefits. I said I had no means of getting home and was in my late 60's. She went away and about one hour later someone told me there was a taxi waiting for me outside.

Hello,

This story was submitted to Patient Opinion by the Somerset LINk, on behalf of a Somerset patient who has contacted us as part of our 'Patient Stories' project. We will be keeping a record of all stories submitted, and all responses from providers.

Thanks very much to the person who submitted this story, which will be fed back to Musgrove Park Hospital. I'm sorry that you had difficulty getting transport home from hospital after having to wait a long time. We have heard from lots of patients about their experiences of using transport to and from health appointments in Somerset, and we know that it can be a real problem. We will make sure that Musgrove Park know about your story, and we will ask them to respond.

Best wishes,

LUCY
