"Being sectioned was traumatic for me, and made me worse"

About: Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust / Inpatient mental health care

(as the patient),

I found the experience of being in the Radbourne unit horrific and traumatic. I was in there for a month, sectioned for no reason in my opinion, took there by police.

Another thing there was nothing I could do about being sectioned apparently according to soliciters. Until I was in hospital I couldn't do anything to get out, my understanding is that that's the law. I think this is ridiculous.

I got put in seclusion for no reason as far as I could tell, I was forced to take meds or threatened with injection. It felt like nobody explained what was goin on, I was just left in a room for hours locked in without a drink. I got put in there a few times, I don't think know why and left.

I think the staff didn't like me havin a opinion and when I did I felt they put me through sheer hell for it.

I feel like I was talked to like rubbish by staff who in my opinion were as strange as some of the patients. The consultant stopped my antipsychotic suddenly without stopping slowly which I think you're meant to do and they are meant to be a professional - i think this is a joke. I had bad withdrawal symptoms.

I think these places are awful and didn't help me, just traumatized me and made me worse.

I am sorry that this experience with us was unsatisfactory and I thank the service user for taking the time to share their views.

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust values all feedback and uses it to improve quality and we are always concerned to hear when a service user has had a negative experience and would be keen to hear directly from the individual or their representative.

It is not possible or appropriate to enter into a public discussion via this forum, but would encourage the service user, or anyone with an issue, to contact our Patient Experience Department. This can be done by emailing - DHCFT.PatientExperience@derbyshcft.nhs.uk, or by talking directly to one of the patient experience team on 01332 623791 or 0800 0272128.
