My 86 year-old dad with Alzheimer's was admitted to the Orthopaedic ward with severe back pain. After several weeks it became abundantly clear the staff were not equipped to deal with patients with dementia. A tied-up plastic bag containing his washing was regularly left next to his bed for my step-mum to collect. On two occasions this also contained a full load of faeces wrapped up in his pyjamas. Yes it was tied up but it was left on the ward and thus contravened any hospital hygiene code. But the worst was yet to come. One day we passed the nurses and doctors on the way in and as we approached his bed my step-mum cried out "he's had stroke". I summoned help immediately and then all hell broke loose. How on earth could medically trained staff in a hospital ward not have noticed a stroke until we pointed it out to them?!! He was transferred to Stepping Hill later that day.
"Very worrying"
