"Poor experience at A&E/UTC"

About: University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Having had an operation the day before at St Thomas’, I had been to get a redressing at my local GP. On the way back home, I sustained significant blood loss and an ambulance took me to UCH A&E. The paramedics where excellent. But as soon as I got to UCH it was much worse. I was left alone in a bed behind a curtain for over 3 hours, and was almost never checked on in that time. I was therefore unable to ask for water with which to take the painkillers I needed to, following my operation. The needle put in my right arm when I arrived, to take blood, was done v poorly so that it was v painful and I was unable to use my right arm for the 3+ hours. My hands and legs was partly covered in dried blood, from my earlier blood loss, and no-one brought me anything with which to clean this blood off. At one point a cup of water fell over my bed, leaving it wet, and I saw no-one in the next 90 mins to ask for help with this (I was unable to move due to my operation and blood loss). So I lay in a wet bed, covered in dried blood, in pain and unable to take painkillers, for over 3 hours, before anyone saw me. And I was unable to ask for help (there were also no alarms or similar to call).

A terrible and painful experience from start to finish. I will do all I can to avoid UCH A&E in future.
