"Lack of compassion, unprofessional manner"

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital / General Psychiatry

(as a service user),

Don't usually write things like this but feel my story needs to be told. I have already written a very wordy complaint through the relevant NHS channels as I feel that the experience I had is one that had tainted any mental health appointment I have had or will have again.

I'm 25 and have had a very long, detailed history with my mental health. Last year I saw the psychiatrist who was absolutely brilliant with me and listened to everything I had to say, also spot on with their thoughts regarding my diagnosis. It was great to finally have a solid reason for the way I am which is always good. From then on I have gotten worse, been back and forth to the GP, on different medications, calling crisis team and getting support services to help.

Eventually I was referred to the mental health team for an assessment to see if I could be further supported. I had previously dealt with the person who was taking this appointment and who seemed to have absolutely no enthusiasm when it came time for me to enter the room. Everything I said was totally shut down and classed as "normal". I was told things I do are my "choice" and i had to pinpoint what I was unhappy in my life and make the changes to fix it. The patronising way this was said made me feel like I was in a head teachers classroom getting into trouble. I felt like this person didn't believe a word I said. My medical records are very in depth and I was told I didn't have a mental health condition when clearly I had the written proof from the psychiatrist on the computer they were looking at. A so called health professional was telling me I wasn't clinically depressed. Even though I told them loads of personal things about me being suicidal almost everyday. I was treated like a child who told lies. I wasn't referred onto any mental health services for any sort of support, I was told to go online for help. I don't think this person really even listened to anything I said. The complaints team have my full written experience but I thought I had to share some of my story. I really don't think this people should be allowed to carry out assessments when there's no compassion, empathy or any sort of care for the person needing the help.

Dear help-wanted18

I am very sorry to hear of your described experience and if you could possibly email the detail of who you saw and when to William.Lauder@aapct.scot.nhs.uk then this will allow me to redirect this issue to someone who will be able to look into this and get back to you.

William
