"Maternity assessment room"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital / Maternity

We visited the maternity assessment room this afternoon and the heat in the room was unbearable. When we asked the midwife about this she explained that they had already made a request for help and were simply told to open a window close the curtains and give patients plenty of water to drink. I cannot stress enough how hot the room was and my heavily pregnant daughter was very faint after only a few minutes. I understand that we are having a prolonged heatwave but the weather forecast has been clear for weeks giving time to organise for some arrangements to help patients. We are back at the unit later in the week when it is forecast that it will be even hotter so I hope some changes will have been made by then. As a secondary issue I am surprised that the staff were continuing to function in the extreme conditions.

Thank you for your feedback and I can only apologise if the room was uncomfortable during this warm weather spell. Unfortunately the recent heat wave has made it difficult to keep all areas of the hospital as cool as normal, however, I will feedback your comments to the team and see if there are adjustments that can be made.
