"Birth of my second child"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit Stirling Royal Infirmary / Maternity care

(as the patient),

Throughout my pregnancy I found my care person centred and efficient. I had two incidents which required me to contact and attend triage. Again I found the midwives and Consultants friendly and approachable. They listened to my concerns and I felt reassured by the care I received. Nothing was too much bother no matter the time of day.   I was always seen quickly and everyone I had contact with was very human and spoke to me as a person first not just a patient.

It was after a visit to triage I was advised that induction would be the preferable course of action. This was explained in plain English and I felt Informed.

I did have to spend some time in the ward prior to being induced as the labour rooms were very busy. I found this difficult as nobody could tell me anything and I felt a bit ignored but I think this was more because they had no information. When I arrived on the ward I was told It could take 3/4 days for the Induction to have effect. Naively I thought it would all happen very quickly, this might be useful to tell patients before arrival. I also didn't realise my husband couldnt stay, I was frightened of going through the early labour by myself and I think it would be helpful if I had this Information prior to arrival.

However I asked to be given a private room after two days on the ward which the midwife made happen, thank you this really helped me!

Once taken to the labour suites I was amazed at how nice they were. My first birth was at the southern which seemed more sterile. It was peaceful. The midwives were so lovely. Steph and Mhairi made sure I knew what was going to happen. They read my notes and made sure they knew my wishes. I felt so listened to and respected. I was frightened to have the drip, which I had with my first pregnancy. Steph and Mhairi reassured me and once my waters were broken they allowed me sometime to go naturally. I was monitored discretely and  with care and respect.  My husband and I had as much privacy as possible.  They helped me use the ball, dimmed the lights, enabled  me to use my hypnobirthing and tens machine.

When things got tough they were there to guide us and empowered me to give birth in such a positive and lovely way. Honestly it was the best it could be, I felt so proud afterwards. I don't think this would be possible without the care of the midwives.

This was night and day with my first birth where I felt out of comfort and had no connection with the midwife.

This has really inspired me to look at a career in midwifery. Having a positive birthing experience is a great start to your parenting.

Thank you and sorry it's taken so long to write the feedback.... my child still isn't sleeping to well!!!

Thank you so much for your kind words and how fantastic is it that your experience has inspired you to think about a career in midwifery. We will ensure that your feedback including where we could have improved your experience will be shared with the staff in the Unit.

I would like to wish you and your family well and hope that you get lots of pleasure from all the exciting and fun times the future holds with your new addition to the family, and hopefully some sleep in the not too distant future.
