"Miscarriage"

About: Royal Gwent Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

A couple of months ago, I suffered a miscarriage. I called the ambulance at around 2am as a was in a lot of pain and passing a lot of blood. I had recently moved into the area and did not really have a clue what else to do. I was bleeding so heavily that it was impossible for me to leave the bathroom. Around 5am I was called and told that there was a delay because all the ambulances were busy. I was asked if I was still in pain and I replied that I was and also that I was alone. I was reassured that they would be with me soon. At 7am, I was called again and asked did I still needed an ambulance. I replied that to be honest, the bleeding had lessened but I was still in pain so would take a couple of aspirin and see the local doctor. The man on the phone, reassured me that I should go to the hospital to double check that I was ok and that they would send me a taxi.

After a few hours in A and E,  I was eventually taken to the gynecology department. There I was seen by a lovely, kind and compassionate doctor who explained what had happened and was understanding. He took some tests and then talked to another doctor who was on the other side of the curtain. I could hear everything they were saying and was shocked to hear the other doctor make comments about my age and saying that if I was younger then they could run more tests to find what had caused the miscarriage. I was astonished. After such a traumatic event, to hear such comments was devastating. My test results were never given to me, no one followed up my appointment, I was given no support group numbers.  It was my first experience of the NHS in over 10 years and I was shocked. How could a doctor be so insensitive.
