"Excellent care for Hip Replacement Surgery"

About: Royal Orthopaedic Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

I had a left replacement operation on30 May 2018. The care provided by this hospital is excellent. The car parking and external facilities require some improvement. The booking in process at the desk was a bit chaotic and appeared to be disorganised.

However, the clinical booking in was excellent, patient and the nurse took my details with attention and focus. It gave me confidence that my care was going to go well.

Before theatre, the nurse took the time to explain how it was going to be. The Anaesthetic staff explained the recovery process as well as how it would be to go under.

On recovery from the operation, I was propped up in bed and the staff explained that they would get me on my feet as soon as possible. The nursing staff were a multicultural team which, for me from a Black british background, was reassuring. I was told who my named nurse was and the team introduced themsleves to all the patients in my bay. This was excellent as this is not my experience with many hospitals.

I stayed 3 days in hospital including my operation. ON the second day the therapy staff (who were also excellent) got me on my feet and explained that if I was able to go up and down stairs then I would be ready for discharge. this was a clear incentive for me and enabled me to be clear exactly what was required for my return home.

At night the staff were very attentive and responsive to any calls. I needed drinking water to maintain my hydration levels and they were good to note this.

An excellent nurse provided the discharge summary information, the drugs, the letter for my gp and explained what I needed to do in relation to pain management. An excellent therapist explained the movements I could and could not do and the exercises to be done each day.

I cant say how grateful and delighted I was with the service provided at this hospital. More NHS resources need to be added to improve the electronic care record information and its facilities - long live the small hospital, starting with this one.

Thank you for your feedback and I am pleased to see that you mostly had a good experience. The hospital is very aware of the issues with car parking and would like to assure you that we constantly look for new ways to improve this for all of our patients. We are in the process of rolling out electronic prescribing and record keeping so hopefully should you need to come and see us again, you will see the difference (although with the best of intentions, I hope we don't need to see you again!) I will ensure that staff are made aware of your comments.

Kind Regards
