"All great but one nurse was exceptional"

About: Neurosciences (DCN) / Neurosurgery

(as a service user),

I was in for an operation on a brain aneurysm in June 2018. All staff were excellent, but while in the high dependency unit one nurse on the night shift was exceptional.   The lady opposite me was distressed so the nurse sat with her looked at magazine, and talked to her. I'm sure at one point they were doing a jigsaw when the lady was calmer the nurse put her in to bed.   She stayed with her till she fell asleep.   The nurse then took a chair and sat outside the ward in the doorway as the lady had tried to leave the ward earlier on that evening and had fallen.   The nurse did her night time duties but always returned to the chair and to check on her patient.   I can not remember the nurse's name but I thought she was brilliant.

Dear HAH,

Many thanks for taking the time to write and share your feedback about the staff and one nurse in particular. I have shared your story with Hester Niven, Clinical Nurse Manager for the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and she was delighted to hear your kind words. These will be shared with the nursing team so that the colleague in question is aware of your lovely feedback.

Thanks again for getting in touch, I hope your recovery is going well.

Kind Regards

Helen

Update posted by HAH (a service user)

I was in Western General in Edinburgh and the specialist nurse was Karen who was very helpful to me. I must correct a mistake as my operation was in May and not as I stated June..

Dear HAH,

Thanks for providing further information, I will pass this on to Hester to ensure that Karen gets the recognition she deserves!
