"Nobody listened"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department University Hospital Hairmyres / General Medicine (Wards 9-12)

(as a relative),

My husband suffered a stroke (blockage)

Admitted to ward for a week on aspirin

Home for a week, doing well

Suddenly developed sickness and headaches

Wondered if it could be something to do with stroke

Call stroke nurse for advice, suggests calling for GP

Called GP who visited, left prescription for anti sickness, probably a bug!

No change next day. Call to GP, left new prescription at surgery

Still being sick next day and getting weaker, not eating, drinking very little

Decided to go to A&E due to weakness, still wondering if something to do with stroke

Observations and bloods ok. Checked over by Dr, sent home with stronger anti sickness - Nothing to do with stroke!

Still struggling to eat and drink, sleeping a lot with effects of anti sickness

Day 5, called GP again, new prescription given, give it another 24hrs

That evening he became unresponsive to me so I called an ambulance

Checked out in A&E, obs, bloods, urine, chest X-ray all fine so probably home

We had lots of questions for Dr and wondered if a CT scan would be done

Doctor wasn’t sure what was going on so decided to keep him in overnight

I spoke to doctor on ward next afternoon still wondering if they would do CT scan

Agreed this would be done and within a couple of hours it was done and results back

My husband had another stroke, a bleed this time. Could be caused by aspirin I believe

Why did nobody pick up on this, why did he have to go through such a terrible time

Nobody really listened to us. I wouldn’t take someone to A&E with a sickness bug

It worries me what might have happened if he hadn’t been unresponsive to me

How long could that have gone on

Nobody listens, sometime seems like nobody cares

Be good to speak to someone about our experience

Dear Mickey Mac

I am sorry you have had a negative experience when using our service and felt that nobody listened and sometimes nobody cared, our staff try very hard to provide a high standard of care to their patients and families and it clear from your post that you have not felt this was the case. I would really appreciate the chance to engage with you further about this, if you could contact our patient affairs department on 01355 585325 so we can arrange this I would be very grateful

Kind regards

Kirsty
