"my mother admisison through esh"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

my mother 91 years old was admitted to A+E an evening last week by ambulance.

I arrived a while later on the instruction of the ambulance crew.

when I arrived I went A +E reception and gave my mothers name and was told to go through the doors and turn right. I got to the doors but they swipe card entrance so could not get thought them and receptionist did not come and assist me, but luckily a pts family member was on the other  side of the door and let me through, and was then assisted by an ambulance crew as the instruction I had been give were incorrect.

when I found my mother she was opposite the rapid access reception and one of the hca told me she would be soon, and left me standing next to my mother no offer of a chair at all. the receptionist a little while later went and got me a chair to sit on. I was then informed my Mother was next to be seen by the duty doctor.

while waiting to be seen, sitting next to my frail mother I had to endure a member of staff complaining to colleagues about the shifts they had been rotad, I don't think pts need to hear all this, plus one nurse shouted out at the junior member who was sitting at the desk to come and help move a bed and asked why they werent doing any thing. Again no appropriate I feel..

the duty doctor was very nice and examined my mother and arranged for an x-ray and scan of her head, we were then moved away from their area to another area round the corner and on moving a hca in a loud voice told off a staff member for badly handling some equipment, again not appropriate around frail and sick members of the family.

I must say the staff who looked after my mother in A+E were very kind to her. Shame the other staff could not keep there complaints to the staff room and talk to each other politely in front of pts and family members.

My mother was eventually moved to AMU at approx. 11.00 in the evening and the staff there were lovely. I went home feeling a lot relieved and felt my mother was in safe hands.

On arriving home I went to bed exhausted and managed to get to sleep. Our phone rang at 4 am and my husband answered to be told it was the hospital, he promptly gave the phone to me, whom the doctor asked if I was my Mums next of kin, to which I replied yes , waiting to be told she was passing away. Did not expect to be asked, "Could you please tell me why your mother had been admitted to Hospital" do the Doctors not read my mothers notes from A+E, I found this very distressing and why would you ring someone at  4am. to ask this question, could it not have waited till at least 07.00 am . ( I look forward to your response on this matter.) I also found it concerning that no one new what treatment or test my mother was needing on AMU either, all her paper work was very contradicting from A+E. Doctor and AMU Doctor.

My mother has since been moved to Hazelwood ward, and the staff on Hazelwood ward have been lovely and know what is going on, and she is getting better.

I look forward to your response

disappointed daughter

Dear lynneypops

I am sorry to hear of your and your mother's experience at East Surrey Hospital. I would be happy to investigate further if you would like to email nicola.shopland@nhs.net.

In the meantime I will share your observations of the ED staff with the Matron; this falls below our expected standards of behaviour and can only apologise for this.

With regards to the AMU clinicians calling you it would be helpful to have further details so that we can understand provoked that call.

with thanks for your feedback

Update posted by lynneypops (a service user)

What further details would you require, regarding amu, I don't know the doctors name, but would expect it to be in my mothers notes as I would imagine this should of been written in her notes, .

My mother is now on iru
