"Colonoscopy procedure at the Hallamshire Hospital"

About: Royal Hallamshire Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a relative),

A couple of years ago I had to have a colonoscopy. I was quite apprehensive and a little scared. After reading the leaflet I had been given, I asked if I could have a sedative and one was given. However, the procedure seemed to start immediately after -well before the sedative had had time to take effect!

I found the procedure very painful and distressing. A very kind nurse held my hand the whole time as she could see that I was in pain. I only felt the effects of the sedative once it had all finished about 25 minutes later. I don't see the benefit for the patient of being given a sedative if it is not given the adecuate amount of time to take effect.
