"Great service but room for improvement"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital / Maternity care

I received a excellent service throughout my pregnancy from community midwives, MAU, sonographers, reception staff and student midwives.

However on the day of delivery of my baby that evening I was subjected to rude, unprofessional and a argumentative Midwive who woke up me, my partner and newborn baby to stamp her authority around then continued to argue with my partner after making him feel he couldn’t stay in the personal room we had paid for.

The room itself was tatty and the recliner chair for my partner to sleep on looked like it had come off a skip. The shower was dirty was resadue from previous showerings.

Also partners and other partners couldn’t even have a cup of tea due to lack of mugs! I’m not sure if this is the official reason but this was clear from the amount of signage in the canteen area. This day and age surely birth partners matter too and too have a shortage of mugs which cost pennies is unbelievable. The fact that the personal rooms are advertised at price per night however when booking you have to pay for two nights in advance which is not advertised anywhere. I have made a complaint which is almost two weeks old apart from receiving a response from the Admin team no one else has contacted me which is very disappointing.

I understand that the NHS is working hard and I have always and still a massive supporter of the NHS. I would never of complained about all the little things had our first night of being parents been ruined by the attitude of a member of staff at 4am. Which after that night of a bad experience counteracts all the good! Such a shame.

After that incident we had to stay in a further night for medical reasons and the treatment was outstanding.

I am so sorry to read of your poor experience. As a Trust, we value all feedback whether positive or not; and I will share your comment with the Management Team for Maternity Services and with the Complaints Team for their information and learning.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments about our hospital.

Kind regards

Rebecca Pilling, Quality Improvement Facilitator: Patient Experience.
