"DIABOLICAL FAILURE TO SIMPLY RETURN PHONE CALLS"

About: Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust

The telephone service available to people subject to the care of KMHT, i.e. Folkestone Crisis/ Kent Community Health Team, as only access telephone number 01303 227510 is extremely poor.

1. The line is only manned in office hours.

2. On occasions when 01303 227510 is answered, the caller is only able to leave a message requesting the call to be returned by a member of KMHT staff.

3. On 99% of occasions when requesting to speak to a particular member of staff, the response is invariably...

- She is not in the office, or she is in a meeting, or another member of staff returns the call with the promise that they will call back later on that day.

- On every occasion they do not return the call in any way on the day.

The person is left in a vacuum with no expectation of when they will make contact.

This is beyond rudeness and inefficiency.

She should do her job.

She should make maintaining communication with people subject to her care her top priority.

Hence people who do request her attention, can be sure to get a reply from her directly, or when promised a telephone reply, do actually get one from member of staff on the day.

This is basic etiquette and polite working practice.

To do otherwise is simply not good enough.

We are really sorry to hear about the difficulties you have had in contacting people regarding your care.

We do recognise that our Trust is experiencing challenges relating to the amount of demand placed upon our community teams and the capacity we have to respond but clients like yourself should be able to have your calls returned in a timely manner.

We know that reception staff do pass on messages to staff when a message is left for them and these messages should be responded to.

Your comment has been passed on to the team manager who will discuss it with the team and see how we can improve the responsiveness of the team.

If you remain dissatisfied around contacting your care coordinator then you could seek assistance from PALS by calling 0800 783 9972 or email pals@kmpt.nhs.uk.
